We are honored to announce a landmark philanthropic gift to the Armenian International Women’s Association (AIWA): a $100,000 endowed scholarship fund, the Zarig Youredjian Scholarship Endowment, established by Jack and Zarig Youredjian through the AIWA-LA Affiliate. This generous donation reflects their steadfast commitment to education, empowerment, and the advancement of Armenian women around the world.
Jack and Zarig Youredjian’s journey to philanthropy is a legacy rooted in humble beginnings and deeply personal. Jack’s path to higher education was inspired by a scholarship from the Gulbenkian Foundation, a milestone that opened doors to new opportunities. He earned a degree from the American University of Beirut and later a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Southern California. He began his career by opening his first pharmacy in 1977, ultimately building a growing chain by starting Western Drug Medical Supply, which has developed into a leader in the medical supply field with eight divisions across California.
Zarig’s story is equally compelling. Born into a family rooted in Gesaria, she and her family moved from Cyprus to London, where she attended high school. Zarig’s lifelong involvement with the Armenian community—participating in dance groups and organizing commemorative events that celebrate Armenian life and culture—underscores her deep commitment to heritage and community. A fateful visit to Los Angeles introduced her to Jack, and it was love at first sight.
The Youredjians’ philanthropy extends beyond individual success to broader community impact. Zarig Youredjian is a lifelong AIWA Los Angeles member and one of the organization’s most devoted supporters and donors. Together, they are passionate believers in the transformative power of education and scholarship. “My mom has an extraordinary way of putting others first,” said their daughter Rene Arakelyan. “She embodies pure grace, kindness, generosity, and a boundless capacity to love. She is the heart and rock of our family.”
Jack and Zarig have already helped support more than 300 young scholars in Armenia, creating opportunities and changing lives for future generations through meaningful contributions to COAF (Children of Armenia Fund. Through their generosity they are reinforcing their commitment to sustainable development in rural Armenia and the empowerment of families and communities through education.
The Zarig Youredjian Scholarship Endowment will provide enduring support to Armenian women pursuing higher education, professional development, and leadership opportunities. “This, (the endowment) does not surprise me., said their son Haig. “Her actions and contributions are backed by her unwavering dedication and compassion, and I am proud and thankful for her each and every day.”
This endowed fund ensures that generations of bright, determined students will receive the resources they need to pursue their dreams, overcome barriers, and shape a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities. “We are eternally grateful for Jack and Zarig’s shared vision for education and community.
