Tatiana der Avedissian
Today, we feature Tatiana der Avedissian, Business Development Manager.
Tatiana is a communications specialist and works for The Economist Group as business development manager, responsible for the commercial development of the World Ocean Initiative. She previously worked for the Guardian and the Spectator. Tatiana uses her expertise to support strategy and fundraising development for two charities in the UK, serving as trustee and vice-president for Alkionides UK, and trustee and advisor of the Armenian Institute. She is a member of the board of advisors for the Shirley Chisholm Education Foundation, fundraising chair of the Harvard W3D (women in development, defense and development) network and co-programming chair of HKS Women’s Network. More recently, she was invited to teach a program on ethics and politics for women working in the private and public sector in Ecuador.
Tatiana has a BA (Honors) in politics from Kingston University and is currently completing her executive education in public leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Q: What is your life philosophy?
Be thankful, appreciate every moment, be kind, help others where you can and be brave. At university I had motivational and inspirational quotes stuck on my wall and written down, they’ve stayed with me till today. One is a quote by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, ‘Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it’; the other by Sidonie Gabrielle Colette ‘What a wonderful life I’ve had! I only wish I’d realized it sooner’; another by Hunter S. Thompson ‘when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro’; and also, one by Pierre-Francois-Pascal Guerlain “Glory is ephemeral, only distinction lasts”.
Q: What is your hope for the future?
It sounds like a cliche but equality for women globally, a healthier planet, and a prosperous and secure Armenia.

Q: We called 2020 the year of the upheaval and awakening? What were your biggest upheavals and what did they teach you? What was your awakening(s) and what did it teach you?
Being away from loved ones, the passing of my uncle and the war. Being thankful and staying positive may seem like fleeting emotions and just well-meaning advice but try it, it helps.
Q: How has the Armenian culture shaped you?
Our history awakened me to the injustices that occur in life and why we cannot remain silent. We need to use our voices to help others.
