United Nations

AIWA continues its active presence as an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) at the United Nations in New York, thanks largely to the efforts of our chief representative, Mary V. Toumayan, who attends meetings regularly, and Joan Agajanian Quinn, who represents AIWA at many UN-sponsored conferences. Other active members of AIWA's team at the United Nations are Joy Renjilian-Burgy, Barbara Merguerian, and Hasmig Tatiossian.

AIWA is particularly active in such UN affiliates as the Commission on the Status of Women, which sponsors annual conferences in New York in the spring; UNIFEM, the United Nations Development Fund for Women; and . We are affiliated both with ECOSOC (UN Economic and Social Council) and DPI (Department of Public Information). Over the years AIWA has organized workshops, often co-sponsored by other international organizations, on a number of topics. For example, at the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights in Paris in 2008, AIWA member Dr. Ani Kalayjian organized a workshop on the theme "Women's Rights are Human Rights: Cases from Africa, Caucasus, Europe and the Middle East". That same year Mariam Nighosian served as facilitator at the Consultation Day program preceding the annual meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women on the topic "Fostering Women's Entrepreneurship". The program attracted a large number of women representing several non-governmental organizations that currently fund a variety of programs for women in many parts of the world. AIWA annually sponsors a full page ad in the booklet for the CSW sessions, which attract government ministers along with representatives from more than a thousand non-governmental organizations.

We recently presented a parallel event at the 56th annual session of the CSW in New York on February 27, 2012 on the theme: "The empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication: development and current challenges." Ever since our 2004 International Conference in Geneva, AIWA has had a registered delegation, headed by Nune Magoyan, at the United Nations in Geneva. We welcome members who would like to join AIWA's various UN delegations and participate actively in some of the many informative conferences, workshops, and meetings taking place there.
