New York — The United Nations (UN) Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) held its 56th session this year on the theme “The Empowerment of Rural Women and Their Role in Poverty and Hunger Eradication: Development and Current Challenges.” CSW sessions attract hundreds of women annually to New York from all parts of the world. The Armenian International Women’s Association (AIWA) participated in the meeting by sponsoring a workshop on Mon., Feb. 27, the opening day of the session.

The AIWA workshop focused on issues relating to the position of rural women in Armenia, enhanced by perspectives gained from programs developed in other nations. Illustrated presentations by two professionals experienced in working with rural women evaluated various strategies used to address the empowerment of women.

The first presenter, Sara Anjargolian, is a photographer and attorney in Los Angeles who has documented the lives of the Zulu people in South Africa, the plight of the extreme poor in Armenia, and the status of refugees living along the border with Azerbaijan in Armenia’s rural areas. She spoke about the power of images to inform and inspire social change, and about her personal transformation while spending time with these groups.

Anjargolian also addressed the benefits of partnering documentary photographers and media professionals with aid organizations, focusing specifically on how narrative imagery can empower the individuals depicted and help contextualize their unique challenges and triumphs.

The second presenter, Ana Cristina Schirinian, divides her time between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Yerevan, Armenia (and often places in between). An attorney by profession, she is special assistant to Edwardo Eurnekian, head of Corporación América, an Argentine holding company active in a number of diverse industries, including airport construction and management.

Over forty Bay Area supporters of the Armenian International Women’s Association gathered at the home of Gregory Matsoyan and Elena Sagayan in Pleasanton, California on the evening of Sunday, March 18th, to celebrate completion of the initial steps in the formation of the AIWA San Francisco Affiliate. The event was attended by numerous Armenian and non-Armenian supporters, who had the opportunity to learn about AIWA and the remarkable work of the organization in pursuit of the empowerment of Armenian women worldwide.

The affiliate’s Executive Committee President, Gaiane Khachatrian, opened the event with an expression of gratitude to the hosts: “Gregory and Elena have always been active participants in Bay Area Armenian community affairs and their generous act today is once again a testimony to the great level of their commitment to supporting Armenia.”

The program included a presentation of the two projects selected to be the focus of the San Francisco AIWA affiliate over the next few years to improve the economic and social advancement of women in Armenia. Vice President, Lusine Yeghyazarian and Executive Committee Member Susanna Cogswell, summarized the first project, which plans to provide micro-loans to socially vulnerable, talented, motivated young women entrepreneurs in Armenia. President Khachatrian noted that numerous studies have documented how access to financial services improves the status of women within the family and the community, making them more assertive and confident. Dr. Elena Sagayan introduced the formative steps underway to pursue a second project that will focus on the reproductive health care of women in the rural areas of Armenia.

Guests responded enthusiastically to invitations to join the affiliate and to donate to help the organization carry out its mission to build a positive, productive and peaceful environment to enable women in Armenia to thrive.

AIWA members and supporters enjoyed a musical program of selections from several operas and stunning performances of “Tsitsernak” and “Erebuni Yerevan”. Throughout the evening guests continued to socialize and enjoy bountiful food. All expressed their appreciation for an informative and fulfilling event.

ARLINGTON, Mass. – On Sunday, January 8, the Armenian International Women's Association (AIWA) New England affiliate held their third annual Armenian Christmas Celebration at the Armenian Cultural Foundation. A large turnout of members, relatives and friends enjoyed festive holiday cheer. Carolyn Atinizian, president of the AIWA New England affiliate, opened with a Power Point introduction summarizing AIWA's purposes and recent activities. Featured guest Rachel Kaprielian, Massachusetts Registrar of Motor Vehicles, offered inspiring words for the group. She spoke about the rewards of public service and encouraged women to enter this field. Women are often reticent and tend to feel they have to know everything before taking on something, she said. "Just get in there," she advised. "You can ask people to teach you what you need to know once you are there." She talked about her public service at the age of 22, when she first ran for Watertown Town Council. Trying to decide whether to enter the contest, she asked her father, "What if I lose?" He replied, "So what?" With that encouragement she jumped into the campaign and won. She went on to become the state representative for Watertown in the state for several years. In office, she constantly reminded herself to "be confident; you were elected for a reason." She noted, "You get knocked around, but you get up, dust yourself off and keep going." She thanked the Armenian community for their support over the years.

WINCHESTER, Mass.—On Dec. 18, the Armenian International Women’s Assocation (AIWA) New England affiliate hosted a reception at the Winchester home of Eva Medzorian. Speaking on the subject of domestic violence was Heghine Mkrtchyan, the founder and president of AJAKITS, a benevolent organization that helps victims of domestic violence. Headquartered in Gyumri, Armenia’s second largest city, AJAKITS has been operating in Gyumri since 1995, offering valuable assistance in the city’s women’s center and shelte

(L-R) Olga Proudian, Heghine Mkrtchyan, Eva Medzorian, Anahid Mardiros, Alisa Stepanian, and Gayane Seppelin

Medzorian, with fellow AIWA founder Olga Proudian, Board member Alisa Stepanian, and guests Anahid Mardiros, Jack Medzorian, and David and Gayane Seppelin, listened to Mkrtchyan describe AJAKITS’s participation in the 16-day Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign 2011 for Women’s Rights, organized by the Center for Global Leadership in Armenia in November 2011. The slogan of the campaign was “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World.” AJAKITS distributed 5,000 flyers across the region and informed the residents in all 119 communities of the Shirak marz(region) about domestic violence and family health issues. “The women’s situation is terrible, especially in the Shirak marz where the economy is very bad, most men don’t have jobs, and life is hard. Traditions are strong in the Shirak marz. Women’s roles are not respected and they accept their less-than-equal status.

They have low self-esteem. It is very sad,” Mkrtchyan said. AJAKITS, which means “Helping Hands” in English, was the first of its kind non-governmental organization in Armenia to address domestic violence, with programs that help raise self-esteem and self-confidence; the establishment of a 24-7 telephone hotline in 1998; and the first battered women’s shelter run by volunteers.

Featured in the AIWA Newsletter – Autumn 2011

Over 200 women leaders convened in Yerevan in May for a two-day conference designed to attract greater attention to women’s issues and to increase women’s political representation and participation in Armenia. Under the theme “Supporting Women’s Political Participation in Armenia: A Nationwide Women’s Conference and Women’s Platform,” the gathering featured speeches and panel discussions by prominent American and European officials. Below are the opening remarks made by the US Ambassador to Armenia, Marie L. Yovanovitch, who has since completed her 3-year assignment in Armenia and returned to the United States. “The United States has made empowering women and girls one of the cornerstones of our foreign policy. I can’t help but think about all the remarkable and talented women I have met over the last three years here in Armenia and how much the country will benefit when Armenia’s women are fully represented at the decision-making table. We really hope that this conference is one of the steps towards making it possible. I hope that you will make this conference an on-going, continuous, and sustainable network for sharing and debating ideas, setting priorities, supporting each other, and working together across political party lines, not just to promote dialogue, but to bring about the reforms that will strengthen Armenia and create the bright and prosperous future here – in Armenia – that your children deserve.
