AIWA and the united nations

AIWA has been active as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) at the United Nations in New York City since 1994, affiliated with both the Department of Public Information (DPI) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Over the years AIWA has organized various workshops, often co-sponsored with other organizations, on a number of topics. We have also joined other organizations in signing statements and petitions that advance our mission. In recent years our activity has been focused on the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), which sponsors a major conference in New York City annually in the spring and where in recent years we have sponsored or co-sponsored a panel as an NGO parallel event.

AIWA’s participation at the United Nations is made possible through the activities of several volunteers, including at present Nicole Vartanian, chief representative, and representatives Tiana Toumayan Smilow, Joan A. Quinn, Joy Renjilian-Burgy, and Barbara Merguerian.
